Our Work in Uganda

Program Description: Uganda

As in many African countries, midwives represent an important segment of private sector health care in Uganda and are therefore well positioned to improve reproductive health/family planning services. The Abt Associates led-PSP-One project recognizes their enormous potential and has begun working with the Uganda Private Midwives Association (UPMA) to improve the quality of private midwife practices in Uganda. To accomplish this, PSP-One is developing a self-assessment Quality Improvement (QI) tool for the Uganda context and conducting a research activity to measure its impact on the quality of the midwives’ practices. The research component seeks to answer three questions:

  1. Is the QI tool effective in improving the quality of the services provided by the private midwives?
  2. Is the tool more effective when used in the context of a professional association?
  3. Is the tool more effective when used in the presence of supportive supervision?
