About the Projects Database
The private health sector in developing countries is as diverse as the organizations that comprise it. A variety of institutions deliver health care, ranging from private hospitals to provider networks to village shopkeepers.
Unlike in the public health sector, however, private groups are not arranged in a formal structure. Therefore it can be difficult to learn about private-sector endeavors. Access to information about their activities would encourage collaboration, prevent the duplication of efforts, and allow for the further dissemination of lessons learned and success stories.
To work towards those ends, the Private Sector Working Group developed this searchable database of over 140 health projects in developing countries that involve the private sector. This database is a central repository for private health sector initiatives.
The information in the database was gathered from many sources, including the Development Gateway portal, the Communications Initiative, and the United States Agency for International Developmentās Global Health web site. The Private Sector Working Group focused its search on private-sector activities that pertain to family planning, reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS. Although the database contains donor-funded projects that work with the private sector, it was a challenge to find information about the many health projects supported by commercial private-sector companies, such as Exxon-Mobil, Aldo, and Coca-Cola.
This database is not exhaustive, but instead offers information about a range of private health activities. It is searchable by keyword, country, region, and implementing organization. PSP-One will add projects to this database every six months. Please help keep it updated. If you know of a private health sector project to include, please e-mail information about it to info@psp-one.com.
