Are there any experiences with the conversion of an NGO-administered health service network (non-profit network) into a franchise? What would be your/their recommendations if an NGO wants to use franchising as an expansion strategy?
Answers
Greenstar Social Franchise Pakistan is a conversion model . In 1995 it began as a branded training program with a grant from the German Government through KfW. The grant was for adding female clinical contraceptive methods to the already successful condom social marketing program run by a joint venture between Social Marketing Pakistan and Population Services International, USA.
Very soon the three elements of a franchise: the business format; the brand and quality assurance mexhanisms were developed to convert the network into a partial model of social franchise engaging the already well developed private health sector in Pakistan.
NGOs that want to use the social franchise strategy would first need to do a situation analysis of their country health context including government policies, then prepare the three key elements mentioned above and decide on the model ; wether they would prefer a fractional or full franchise .
The social franchise strategy will both increase access and improve quality using exisitng infrastructure.
