K-MET's mission is to promote innovative health programs as the basis for holistic community development. The organization focuses on three specific project areas: safe abortion care, adolescent sexuality and reproductive health, and AIDS prevention and support. To reduce the high rates of maternal mortality in Kenya, a large portion of which is due to unsafe abortions, as typical in all countries where safe services are not available. The network is composed of approximately 180 existing for-profit medical practices, the rural portion consisting primarily of mid-level providers (nurses, clinical officers). The nonprofit organization K-MET trains the providers in family planning, post-abortion care and safe early abortion services, and provides contraceptive supplies.
