PSP Jordan Initiatives in Family Planning and Violence Against Women

Family Planning

The Abt Associates-led PSP Jordan program conducted a contraceptive market assessment of Jordan in November 2007. The latest Demographic Health Survey (DHS) shows that intrauterine devices (IUDs) and oral contraceptives (OCs) are popular among users and traditional methods also remain a popular choice. During the next few months, PSP Jordan will investigate the feasibility of introducing ‘Safe Day Cycle Beads’ in partnership with PSP-One to provide Jordanian couples with more options, and to introduce a new method to the private market.

Violence Against Women

PSP Jordan’s efforts to address Violence Against Women (VAW) include alerting private hospitals and doctors to the legal obligations and medical issues associated with treating women victims of violence. The participating hospitals have agreed to adopt standards of practice related to VAW and two have developed forms for emergency room use. To date, 90 staff members from 9 private hospitals have been trained to diagnose female victims of violence and to refer them to supporting services.
