PSP Central America: Guatemala Condom Distribution Strategy
The development of a Total Market Approach national strategy to distribute free social marketing and branded condoms to the most vulnerable population groups recently begun in Guatemala. A series of meetings have taken place between Abt Associates/Population Services International(PSI)/PASMO, the World Vision, the Global Fund Principal Recipient and seven non-governmental organizations (NGOs) (Fundación Marco Antonio, Asociación de Salud Integral, Gente Nueva, Gente Positiva, Cruz Roja, IDEI and Fundación Fernando Iturbide). These organizations implement AIDS prevention projects under the Global Fund auspice. In order to determine underserved areas through the Measuring Access and Performance –MAP- Study results, they review available information, education, and communication (IEC) materials which Abt/PSI/PASMO have specially designed for these audiences through the “Tienes? Pídelo” Category Campaign. Lists of high-risk outlets in the country were compiled and have been distributed among the participating agencies.
The Global Fund supported NGOs have accepted the challenge of widening their free condom distribution strategy by including low socioeconomically “C” outlets. In addition to their direct distribution to consumers approach, World Vision has adjusted their project reporting and monitoring procedures to include the new initiative. Likewise, PASMO has accepted the challenge to distribute their social marketing condoms in “B” outlets and joined forces with recognized firms to promote and sell branded condoms. Including PASMO’s highest priced condoms which seek to improve sensation and are sold in various colors and textures.
A formal commitment of cooperation has been established by the aforementioned agencies. Under this commitment agencies will conduct condom, lubricants and educational materials distribution activities which are anticipated to begin December 2008.
