PSP-One Guatemala Launches Training Course for Private Physicians on HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing
As part of the specialized courses offered at the 50th Annual Medical Association Conference, the Medical Association and PSP-One Guatemala organized a first-ever training course for private physicians on HIV/AIDS counseling and testing.
Fifty-five private physicians attended a 5-hour training course taught by several of Guatemala’s leading experts who work at one of the country’s premiere HIV/AIDS integrated treatment centers. The curriculum was designed specially to address the challenges private providers encounter in their daily private practice. Topics focused on the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in Guatemala, clinical suspicion and diagnostic approaches, an introduction to HIV/AIDS tests and national diagnostic algorithms, and an overview of the HIV/AIDS law and national counseling guidelines. Attendees included a wide range of physicians: general physicians (43%), gynecologists-obstetricians (29%), dermatologists (10%) and others (pediatricians and internists) 10%. An automated person-response system allowed the monitoring of the acquired knowledge on these key topics throughout the training activity, in which participants received 6 Continuing Medical Education credit hours.
